United Science QuEChERS Tubes Features

  • Super-strong particles won’t break when you shake or during shipping.
  • Greatly improved recovery of polar lipophilic analytes without toluene while removing more matrix!
  • Won’t break up and stick to walls!
  • High performance CarbonX removes pigments, sterols, lipids.
  • PSA (primary & secondary amine) removes acids (at low pH) and sugars (via hydrogen bonding).
  • MgSO4 forces phase separation; Alumina optionally incorporated for lipid samples.

United Science QuEChERS Tubes Benefits

United Science incorporates CarbonX  into its standard QuEChERS offering in response to major problems associated with traditional carbons.  CarbonX was developed to offer superior recovery characteristics without having to re-elute polar planar analytes with toluene when conducting cleanup for multi-residue analysis.  The resulting chromatographic materials offers the following benefits:

  1. Great recovery of planar pesticides with no need to add toluene  to elute as is required for other carbon materials or GCB.
  2. Greater matrix removal leading to less fouling of liners and columns (both GC and LC).
  3. Greater matrix removal leading to better calibration stability.
  4. Greater matrix removal leading to less ion suppression/enhancement effects in LC/MS/MS.

Why so many different cartridges?

Now, you dont need to have 6-10 part numbers with inventory building up for each unique cartridge you need.  We introduce the UNIVERSAL QuEChERS Cartridge.  There are many different QuEChERS tubes filled with differing amounts of sorbents for lipids, for pigmented samples, heavily pigmented samples, for non pigmented samples.   One of the key reasons for all these different cartridges is because the GCB is so problematic.  However, since CarbonX does not have the same problems that GCB has, and it takes out non-colored matrix quite well, we recommend that CarbonX be added to all matrices, thus making a UNIVERSAL QuEChERS cartridge.   This cartridge has MgSO4, PSA, C18, and CarbonX.  It should work well for common matrices and you dont have to worry about all those part numbers.

The “QuEChERS” (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe) method, dispersive SPE (dSPE), is a sample preparation technique that is used to remove matrix from samples so that  the levels of many  analytes  can be simultaneously determined.  This multi-residue analysis is typically conducted  in food and agricultural products but is now becoming popular in environmental samples as well.  Automated QuEChERS will likely become more popular in clinical over time.

In the QuEChERS method, food/agricultural samples are first extracted with an acidic organic solvent (acetonitrile with 1% acetic acid)  in the presence of high amounts of salts (e.g., sodium chloride and magnesium sulfate) and/or buffering agents (e.g. citrate) to induce liquid phase separation between the organic and aqueous phases and stabilize acid and base labile pesticides. Upon shaking and centrifugation, an aliquot of the organic phase  is  prepared with  dispersive SPE. Unlike traditional methods of sample clean up using SPE tubes, in dispersive SPE, the matrix is removed  from the sample using bulk amounts of sorbents (e.g.,  PSA, CarbonX, and C-18) with the extract. After sample clean up, the mixture is centrifuged and the resulting supernatant is either be analyzed directly or can be subjected to minor further treatment before analysis.

HOW-TO VIDEO

You mean it is important that  analytical sorbents are mechanically stable?

United Science is pleased to offer QuEChERS Products incorporating CarbonX.   You can see the difference between our CarbonX product and GCB just by applying pressure on the QuEChERS sorbents with your finger.   You can see that only a little pressure changes the particle size, pore structure, and  surface area.

Estimtated 4x Improvement in GC Liner Lifetime!

GC liners are a costly consumable for any operation that routinely uses GC for analysis.  We have shown that not only is CarbonX great for removal of polar pigments, it also removes more matrix--even matrix that is not colored.   This is shown clearly in the adjacent picture comparing two liners with equal numbers of injections of matrix matched standards on them. Every variable  is held constant except we cleaned one  matrix with GCB dual phase, and the other matrix with CarbonX dual phase.  Clearly, CarbonX outperforms.  Based on our estimates, you will change your liners 4x more when you use GCB.  Now, we are not even mentioning column maintence here!

CarbonX Dual Phase SPE Outperforms

GCB is typically used to clean up pigments from the Matrix and is commonly incorporated in dual phase SPE tubes.  The key problem is that GCB also strongly binds polar planar analytes like hexachlorobenzene and carbendazim.   See adjacent Figure comparing CarbonX performance to any other carbon on the market today.   Typically, toluene is added to the cartridge to recover these from the GCB.      However, the toluene elutes the pigments back into the eluent!!!  These pigments get injected onto your column or liner and cause fouling, matrix effects, and frequent column maintenance and costly recalibration!

There is significant value (i.e. cost savings) in-use.    We have shown that because our CarbonX removes more matrix but not your target analyte you can expect the following savings:

1. Reduce your liner replacement frequency ( estimated 4x more injections on a standard liner)

2. Lengthen the time between required calibrations (reduction in cost related to frequent recalibrations.

3. Improve column life (even if you backflush).
